Standardisation transforms the data to have a mean of 0.

Definition

In statistical terms, ‘zero mean’ refers to the adjustment of data values so that their average equals zero. This transformation involves subtracting the mean of the dataset from each data point. This procedure is extremely useful in data processing, particularly when different variables have different scales, to give them equal importance in our analysis.

Example

In the context of sport, consider the heights of basketball players from various teams.

If the average height is subtracted from each player's height, the resulting dataset will have a zero mean. This allows us to compare height deviations more objectively across players from different teams.
